Abstract

Nizami Ganjavi (c. 1141–1209) is a great romantic epic poet of Persian language. He was born in Ganja city now in Republic of Azerbaijan. At that time the whole Persian speaking area was part of Seljuk Empire, which existed from 1037 to 1194 A.D. having Iranian city Nishapur as the capital of the empire. Nizami is famous for his poetical work named as The Khamsa or Panj Ganj, which literally means 'Five Treasures'. It includes five masnavis. Due to his great knowledge in several other fields, he was given the title of Hakim (sage). His Panj Ganj became so popular in the literary world that several poets of Indian Subcontinent worte masnavis imitating his style. Persian poets like Amir Khusrau and Nurad-Din Abdur-Rahman Jami and Allama Muhammad Iqbal wrote Persian masnavis. It has also been observed that the Masnavis written in Punjabi like Saif al Malook, Shireen Farhad, Heer Ranjha etc. are also written while copying the style of Nizami’s Masnavis. Recenlty, UNESCO celebrated the 880th anniversary of the great Nizami Ganjavi with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan at the UNESCO Headquarters, Paris. This celebration emphasized Nizami’s contribution to the literature and especially to the heritage of Persian language.
