Abstract

The grandfather of Sidi Ali Rais (1498-1562 AD) settled in Galata district of Istanbul during the reign of Sultan Muhammad Fateh II ۔ As a commander, for the first time in his life, he joined the attack on the fortress of Rhodes by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the strongest king of the Ottoman Empire ۔ Later, Khair al-Din participated in various wars in the Mediterranean with famous Ottoman sea captains like Barbaros, Sinan Pasha and Turgud Rais ۔ In place of Murad Rais, who lost the war to the Portuguese, Sultan Quni Sulaiman Khan appointed Sidi Ali Rais as the captain of India and ordered to bring the royal fleet from Basra to the port of Suez in Egypt ۔ On July 2, 1554, the army of Sidi Ali Rais, who moved from Basra to Suez with the royal fleet, encountered the Portuguese in the Strait of Hormuz between the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf on August ۔ 9 On August 25, the Portuguese attacked again near Muscat, destroying five Ottoman warships ۔ When this convoy was near Amman, the storm known as Cyclone Noah occurred, in which the fleet went out of control and reached the coast of India ۔ When it was found impossible to take these boats to the port of Suez due to the Portuguese attacks and the devastating storm, Sidi Ali Rais sold these boats there and decided to go to Istanbul by land himself ۔ In 1555-1556, Sidi Ali Rais, who lived in India for two consecutive years, met many Indian kings including Humayun, Akbar, Sher Khan ۔ The kings of Baluchistan, Sindh, Gujarat and other places in India respected him greatly because he was the Ottoman Amir-ul-Bahr, and after spending about four years on a journey, he wrote the entire history in 1557 and presented it to the legal Sultan Suleiman in Istanbul. In this paper, we will comment on Sidi Ali Rais' views on the various cities, kings, people and nobles of India and the information and scholarly comments about the conditions he saw with his eyes, comparing them with other Indian and Ottoman sources of this period.
