Abstract
In the beginning of 1857, Book & Translation Department was established in Lahore which came to be known as Punjab Book Depot. It was not only a publishing house but also remained helpful in the translation of English, Arabic and Persian books and essays and reformed language and diction of these translations along with supply of syllabus. From this point of view, Punjab Book Depot's active role cannot be ignored in the evolution of Urdu prose.
