Classicism, Modernism and Contemporary Urdu Research in
Universities
Research, in different periods in literary history of Urdu, has different trends in its
thematic and methodological aspects. Main areas of research in classical period were
based on textual criticism and introducing or establishing important literary figures,
schools and trends. Later, new trends in themes inclined to critical analysis, and
methodology based on western trends emerged. Contemporary situation of Urdu
research with regard to themes/topics as well as methodology is struggling to maintain
its standards in higher education institutions of Pakistan. The article discusses some
basic issues to be addressed.
