Abstract
Darya-e-Latafut is Mirza Muhammad Qateel's first book in Urdu Meter and
Prosody which was penned down in collaboration with Syed Insha Ullah Khan Insha
(1223 Hijra/ 1808AD). This book addresses the riddles of Arabic and Persian Poetic
Meters which the exponents of Urdu Poetic Meters are confronted with. Mirza Qateel
was the first person to have realized the problems emanating from the discord between
the Arabic/ Persian and Urdu Poetic Meters. He, therefore, strived to develop an
affinity between Urdu language and Poetic Meters by coining new phrases and
assigning Urdu, Hindi and Birij names for Arabic/ Persian Meters. He evolved new
units to replace the Arabic "Mafaeelon" etc. Besides, he modernized the patterns of
logic and meter. In this context, this book is a valuable addition to the history and
evolution of Poetic Meter.
