Abstract

Abdullah Hussain’s Bagh exposes class conflict as a deep, structural struggle rooted in political neglect and economic inequality. The novel situates this conflict within the historical and geographic realities of Kashmir, where rural poverty and state power intersect. Landowners, state institutions, and security forces represent entrenched authority that controls resources and enforces order. In contrast, peasants, laborers, and young activists embody dispossessed groups who suffer exploitation yet retain a spirit of resistance. Personal tragedies and private ambitions in the narrative reflect broader social injustices, linking individual fate to class position. Acts of repression and corruption in the story reveal how institutions sustain inequality and silence dissent. Romantic attachments and moral dilemmas become shaped by economic dependency and social hierarchy. The novel treats resistance not only as physical struggle but also as a moral and psychological assertion of dignity. Ultimately, Bagh frames class conflict as both political and existential, showing how structural oppression distorts everyday life and human relationships
