Abstract

The Progressive Movement was an organized, active and effective movement of the twentieth century which promoted logical reasoning and twentieth century analysis in Urdu literature especially Urdu criticism. The ideas and writings of Karl Marx and Engels, which expose human history to material realities rather than ideas, influenced the thinking and consciousness of critics of the Urdu progressive movement. Among these critics, Akhtar Hussain Raipuri, Sajjad Zaheer and Majnoon Gorakhpuri laid the foundations of Urdu progressive criticism in the context of Marxist thought and philosophy.
