"The Garlic Ballads" by Mo Yan is the story of a Chinese village where the people stand against corrupt and totalitarian bureaucracy and govenment machinery for the recognition of their rights. Evey chapter of the novel opens with a balld but the mere reading of the novel reveals that these are not ballads, in fact these are monodies lamenting the miserable conditions being faced by the farmers. The characters and plot of the novel depict the way how the vanguards of new systems fail to deliver according to the public sentiments and how they are ruthlessly oppressed and suppressed when they raise their voice for their rights.
